I did a photo wall for an anniversary present since my husband was asking for family photos. I got a ton of custom mats for a few bucks each on etsy. It really brought the project together. I did photos of us all thru the years and wrote the year and location on the frames too. Figure out what you need and then ask for a few prices. Compare that to the price for tools and materials. You never know how it will work out.

A double mat is 2 separate mats, consisting of one top mat, and one bottom accent mat. The bottom accent mat opening should be slightly smaller than your print/picture. The top mat opening should be slightly larger than the bottom mat opening.

We will explain how to order 16" x 20" double mats, for an 11" x 14" picture. The OD (Outer Dimension) of the Bottom mat would be 16" x 20", the ID (Inner Dimension) would typically be 10 1/2" x 13 1/2". This will allow for 1/4" of the perimeter of the 11" x 14" artwork to be hidden (Essentially taped from the back) underneath the opening of the bottom mat. The Top Mat would also have an OD of 16" x 20", however the ID would typically be 11" x 14". This will expose 1/4" of the bottom mat window perimeter (1/4" Reveal), and will create the accent color or double mat effect. Although the 1/2" increment is typically the norm, we allow our customers to choose what they feel will work best for their artwork by ordering each mat separately. Please just keep in mind that when dealing with matting, correct measurements are essential, and one must always think about perimeter measurements. Hence, if an ID window is 1/2" smaller, the perimeter will be effected by 1/4", not 1/2". Most frames also typically cover 1/4" of the perimeter of what is framed as well. For the majority of customers, 1/2" smaller on the window size works out perfect.

Backing boards or mounting boards go behind the piece of art to offer support to the picture mat board and the art as well as giving a finished look by covering over any tape or other hinging used to mount the print. REDIMAT offers an extensive variety of sizes in foam core (archival acid-free or standard craft grade), museum grade rag and economy acid-free boards. Also, available in solid black mounting boards, and black foam boards. Redimat recommends using foam core boards for larger prints over 20x24 for more support.

If your needing 32x40 mat board we have full uncut sheets available in any of our mat board materials and colors. Blanks (boards with no windows) can be cut to just about any size you need and you will save on shipping costs. For example, if all you need is 16x20 mats the cost of shipping is much less than 32x40 would be.

In double matting, two mats are used where the window opening for the top mat is slightly larger than the bottom mat window. The difference between them is called the reveal. Our standard size double mats have a reveal that is 1/4" all around but with any custom matting the reveal can be larger or smaller

Price is twice that of the single mat board pricing found on any mat board material page. To order double mats on the bulk mat board pages you select your size, your bottom mat color and then select double mat and the color you want the top mat to be.
